Visual Models beyond Causal and Decision Maps
Although the focus of this chapter has been the new visual models, the Causal Map and the Decision Map, we don’t want to leave you with the impression that they are the only visual models you need to add to your LAMDA Discussions. In fact, there are many visual models that are commonly needed.
■ Annotated Pictures, Diagrams, and/or Timelines to better communicate the Problem Description or topic of Concern
■ Ideation tools like Nine Windows to help identify all the potential Contributors to the Problem or topic of Concern
■ Pareto Charts to identify the most prevalent contributors (and thus those that should be included in the Causal Map)
■ Alternatives Matrices to identify the solutions that are generated, but more importantly, to help identify the objective criteria that you will use to evaluate those alternatives (and thus should be included in the Causal Map)
■ Free Body Diagrams, Kinematic Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Circuit Diagrams, Process Flow Diagrams, and any other such diagrams that show the important physical elements of the system, how they physically relate, and how they are measured (typically giving clarity to the Decisions identified in the Causal Map)
That larger set of visual models should all be visible to those participating in the LAMDA Discussions developing the Causal Map. That is the role of the K-Brief enabler described in Chapter 3. It should organize those visual models in order to most clearly tell the story that you want all participants in the LAMDA Discussion to understand. The visual models are key to making sure all participants have a shared understanding, which is key to efficient and effective Discussion. The Causal Map might be the most valuable of those as it is the most rigorous, but other visual models are often needed to support the Causal Map. For example, consider the Causal Map from the example Keyboard Problem shown in Figure 4.26.
